🛕 Chamarleni Caves (Gajpanth Jain Caves), Nashik – Complete Guide

Overview

Located on a hillock to the north of Nashik city, Chamarleni Caves, also known as Gajpanth Jain Caves, are sacred and historically important Jain heritage sites. The caves stand around 400 feet above the ground, and visitors need to climb 435 steps to reach the top. The peaceful atmosphere, ancient stone carvings, and spiritual ambience make it a popular spot for both tourists and Jain devotees.

History & Importance

These caves are believed to be over 1,000 years old. Historical references suggest that they were developed during the rule of the southern king Chamaraja, which is why the site came to be known as Chamarleni. According to Jain traditions, the monk Gajakumar Muni attained liberation (moksha) from this very hill, leading to the name Gajpanth.

During the Rashtrakuta period, Virappadev embraced Jainism and became known as Acharya Veersen. Historical texts mention that he established an educational and spiritual learning center at Chamarleni.

The site contains three caves and a Jain temple.

  • The first cave houses three idols of Lord Parshwanath along with the main idol of Lord Mahavir Swami.

  • The second cave contains beautifully carved idols of Shantinath, Kunthunath, Arhanath, and the 24 Tirthankaras.

  • The third cave features a remarkable 11-feet tall seated idol of Lord Parshwanath, one of the main highlights of the site.
